The IM01 is bound to be the race car of the future, designed to compete in the 24 hours of Le Mans. It is currently under development by a group of highly motivated students of the Technical University of Eindhoven and the Fontys University of Applied sciences.
The IM01 is equipped with a series hybrid drivetrains. All four wheels are connected to each individual electric motor, giving the car a permanent four wheel drive. Power comes from a battery which is charged by regenerative braking and a range extender. Because the car is set to compete in a 24 hour race a full electric drivetrain is not yet possible, so the car is also fitted with a rotary engine.
With high performance engines and electric motors a lot of heat is generated and in an energy efficient car this energy is not completely wasted and is used to enhance the aerodynamics properties of the sidepods in the same way as the blown diffuser worked in Formula 1. So even the hot air from the cooling system is reused.
The designers and engineers at InMotion (IM) hope they will be able to race the car at Le Mans in 2017.
